Dept. of Food Technology
The Department of Food Technology at SAFI Institute of Advanced Study was established in 2011 with the mission of providing quality education in food technology by fostering strong fundamental knowledge, technical skills, and practical expertise. The department aims to prepare students for diverse career opportunities in global food industries, higher education, and research, while promoting both basic and applied research in food science and technology for the betterment of society and the nation.
The department envisions becoming a centre of excellence through transdisciplinary approaches in education, research, and industry collaboration, focusing on the development of safe, sustainable, and healthy food systems. In line with this vision, a Postgraduate Programme in Food Science and Technology was introduced in 2015 to further strengthen advanced learning and research opportunities. As an autonomous institution, the department continuously updates its curriculum to align with the evolving needs of the modern food industry. The programme integrates strong foundational sciences with industry-oriented subjects such as Food Engineering, Food Analysis, Food Packaging, Quality Assurance, Food Safety Regulations, Functional Foods, and Novel Processing Technologies. It equips students with in-depth scientific and technical knowledge of food composition, nutrition, physicochemical and microbiological properties, food processing, and preservation, along with specialized training in the processing of fruits, vegetables, cereals, and plantation crops, ensuring graduates develop both academic excellence and practical industry skills.
Beyond classroom learning, the department emphasizes experiential and skill-based education through workshops, certificate programmes, industrial visits, seminars, and hands-on training. To ensure industry readiness, students undergo in-plant training in food industries and also need to complete a three-month dissertation/project work as part of the graduation requirements. These experiences equip graduates with the practical competence and professional confidence needed to excel in various career opportunities in the food sector.
